What is a sports disciplinary appeal?

Sports disciplinary appeals allow athletes, coaches, and officials to contest sanctions imposed by sports governing bodies — including game bans, fines, eligibility rulings, and doping violations.

Common sports disciplinary disputes

• Game suspensions — bans for on-field conduct or rule violations
• Doping violations — challenging positive drug test results
• Eligibility disputes — amateur/professional status, transfer rules, age eligibility
• Financial disputes — unpaid prize money, contract disputes with leagues
• Selection disputes — challenges to team selection decisions

Relevant US governing bodies

Appeals may be directed to individual sport federations (USA Swimming, US Soccer, USATF), the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), the NCAA for collegiate sports, or ultimately to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for international matters.
